The Year of Soft Baits

This post is just a few random thoughts on soft baits; At the beginning of this year, when I was fishing from a  rubber raft or an aluminum swamp boat, I decided that this would be the year that I began to learn and conquer soft baits.

I have always just - not liked them for one reason or another. Jigs, they were OK - and crankbaits were great. Top-waters and spinnerbaits, though, made up the bulk of the tackle in my box when I was younger.

And, crank baits are still great, as shown here!

But, this year was about soft baits - I will go into them a bit more., This is one of the mistakes I made when I first started fishing worms and other soft baits including creature baits, crawdads, lizards, and swimbaits.

This is a Carolina rig - one I bought from a  store. The Carolina rig, when done properly can fill a huge number of roles, and can simulate a crank bait, a jig, or the classic worm. I will go into detail in the next post, and include more pictures of how a Carolina rig should actually be put together. I don't know why you can't buy them in stores, but other than very small custom tackle shops which put them together by hand I have never seen any that I like in the store.

What is pictured above is suitable as a weighted leader for a catfish rig, and that's about it - and it still caught a fish!

I have caught more now, and I still feel as though every time I catch one I do it by accident. I shall keep practicing this technique until that changes!

It is scenes such as this one that make the entire effort worthwhile - whether I catch fish or not, or even by accident, these are the sights that draw me back to the water's edge and beyond. From the glassine beauty of the Spring to the cool and cloudy Summer, and now as the days begin to shorten the feeling of floating in a small sliver appeals to me; it speaks to depths which are rarely, for me, awakened upon dry land.

And that is how I will leave things this week - next time I will be talking about different worm rigs - if anyone has a way of rigging them they want to share, comments are always welcome!

Till the next time, I wish you smooth waters and great days!
